Even if you don’t recognize the name, you might be familiar with Travelers Canada's iconic red umbrella logo. Hardly surprising, considering The Travelers Companies has been around since 1853.

The Travelers name derives from the company's early days as a provider of travel insurance to railroad travellers — a far cry from the jet setters who get travel insurance today. Their journeys were risky enough to warrant the coverage, which is what brought Travelers into existence in Hartford, Conn. in 1864 (earlier operations were carried out by the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co., which merged with Travelers in the early 2000s). Before long, it had morphed into a property and casualty insurer, with travel getting pushed to the periphery of its offerings. Today, Travelers is the second largest underwriter of U.S. commercial property casualty insurance.

Travelers joined the Canadian market more recently (2009), with a merger between St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company and Travelers Guarantee Company of Canada. That resulted in the creation of Travelers Canada, which now boasts approximately 1,700 employees across Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, London, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Dartmouth.

What other insurance products does Travelers offer?

Along with car insurance, Travelers offers a number of different insurance coverage types for individuals, groups and businesses.

Home, condo, renter, and landlord insurance: Travelers has various insurance policies for homes and condos, whether you’re a homeowner, renter, or landlord. Policies include coverage for a dwelling and other structures, personal contents, personal liability, loss of use, and medical payments, plus additional optional coverage add-ons.

Boat and yacht insurance: Basic coverage includes physical damage, personal liability, personal property, towing and assistance reimbursement, mechanical breakdown, uninsured boater, medical payments, commercial towing, fuel spills, and dinghies.

Wedding and events insurance: Private events eligible for coverage include weddings, anniversary parties, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, baby showers, and retirement parties. Coverage includes cancellation or postponement of the event, event photographs/video, event gifts, special attire, special jewelry, and lost deposits, plus optional coverage add-ons for liability and liquor liability.

Travel insurance: Travelers uses its partner Travel Insured International to offer trip and flight cancellation, medical coverage, and baggage coverage.

Pets insurance: Plans are customizable based on deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual limit. Policies can include coverage for both accident and illness or accident only.

Business insurance: Includes different types of coverage for small, large, and multinational businesses. The Travelers website allows users to search by product and solutions (including commercial auto and trucking, general liability, property, cyber, and more) or by industry (transportation, construction, manufacturing, energy and renewables, real estate, healthcare and technology).

There is an app available. Travelers Mobile can be downloaded from the App Store for iPhones or from Google Play for Android phones. The app lets users perform the following functions:

View and make payments.
Enroll in and manage an automatic payment plan.
View personal insurance policy documents.
View detailed coverage and policy information for select auto policies.
Change document delivery preferences.
Report a claim.
Get roadside assistance.
Contact a claim professional if you’d prefer to make a claim through the app rather than through the Travelers insurance phone number.
Link all personal insurance policies to a user ID.
Log in using Touch ID if their devices support it.
