These are the top 10 cheapest cars to insure in Canada in 2021

Car insurance rates depend on several factors, including the vehicle you drive. See how yours stacks up against the average national premium.

Car insurance rates can vary widely depending on several factors, including your driving record, age, gender, where you live, and payment history. But do you know how the vehicle you choose to drive can affect your insurance rates?

Cars with high crash-test scores, low theft ratings, and less powerful engines tend to have cheaper insurance rates. But your premium can also depend on the make, model, and even the year the vehicle was made.

Below, we reveal the top 10 cheapest cars to insure in Canada for 2021 based on the average premium quoted for each model on the LowestRates.ca website. Alongside each vehicle, you’ll see by what percentage that make and model is less expensive to insure than the average national premium. Here’s a breakdown of this year’s cheapest cars to insure:

1. 2009 DODGE JOURNEY SXT 4DR 2WD (-43.29% less expensive than the average national premium)

According to our data, the Dodge Journey is the least expensive car to insure in Canada this year. The mid-size SUV debuted in 2009 to replace both the (pre-minivan) Chrysler Pacifica and the Dodge Magnum wagons. The Dodge Journey was the company’s first attempt at a crossover vehicle, which marries a wagon body to available all-wheel drive.
Sadly, Dodge has announced that the Journey is to be discontinued after the 2020 model year.

2. 2011 FORD F150 XLT SUPERCREW 4WD (-35.78% less expensive than the average national premium)

The Ford F-Series truck is the best-selling pickup model series in the United States and in Canada. Most popular for its fuel efficiency and towing and hauling capabilities, it’s held this title for up to four decades. The 2011 model is specifically renowned for addressing the previous model’s main weakness with an all-new engine.

3. 2010 TOYOTA MATRIX WAGON (-32.90% less expensive than the average national premium)

Sometimes called the Toyota Corolla Matrix, the 2010 Toyota Matrix is essentially the hatchback version of the Corolla sedan. Although it’s also been discontinued since 2014, it’s one of the cheapest cars to insure if you can get your hands on it.

4. 2011 CHEVROLET CRUZE LT TURBO 4DR (-28.83% less expensive than the average national premium)

Despite fierce competition, the 2011 Chevy Cruze has received critical acclaim, including a “Canadian Car of the Year” award, from the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada.

5. 2015 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.0 TDI 4DR HATCHBACK (-27.89% less expensive than the average national premium)

Like most German cars, the Golf is made with the driver in mind. Overall it's a very reliable car with a sleek design that has a lot of features for a decent price. It's available in manual transmission, which is getting harder to come by and can be appealing to drivers looking for that option.

6. 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CE 4DR (-25.94% less expensive than the average national premium)

This is the oldest vehicle on our list. Introduced in 1966, the Toyota Corolla is the world's best-selling vehicle. According to MotorBiscuit, Toyota has sold around 45 million Corolla models to date. The car’s popularity is based on three things: it’s affordable, reliable and simple.

7. 2019 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN GT (-25.89% less expensive than the average national premium)

The Dodge Caravan belongs to a series of minivans that Chrysler manufactured between 1984 and 2020. Even though the long-serving minivan is being phased out, it’s still one of the most affordable cars to own in Canada.

8. 2013 FORD F150 XLT SUPERCREW 4WD (-24.68% less expensive than the average national premium)

Edging out stiff competition, the 2013 Ford F-150 XLT Supercrew ranks near the top of its class and has above-average reliability.

Alberta drivers should note that this model also made The Insurance Bureau of Canada's annual list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in the province last year, making it a bit more expensive to insure.

9. 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SE (-19.54% less expensive than the average national premium)

Popular among families, the Dodge Caravan is one of the cheapest models to insure thanks to lower repair and replacement costs.

10. 2008 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SE (-19.40% less expensive than the average national premium)

Despite its untimely demise, the iconic minivan has three models on this list.
